Marrakech, Atlas, Essaouira: A cultural immersion

Explore Morocco's history

This itinerary is for a 8-day tour of Morocco, which includes visits to the city of Marrakech, High Atlas Mountains and the coastal city of Essaouira, showcasing the rich history, beautiful landscapes and culture of the country.

Day 01: Marrakech Airport / Marrakech

Upon arrival in Marrakech, you will be greeted by a driver with a sign bearing your name who will take you to your hotel. You will spend the night at the hotel. Welcome to Marrakech!

Day 2: Marrakech

Today, you will have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of Morocco, with a focus on the city of Marrakech, which has long been the capital of the Maghreb region. The tour will begin at the Koutoubia Mosque, a 12th-century religious structure known for its 69-meter-tall minaret, which is a prominent landmark in Marrakech. You will then visit the Saadian dynasty tombs, dating back to the 17th century, and see the intricate carved and plaster work that decorates them. The tombs serve as the final resting place for the Saadian family.

Next, you will walk through the 12th-century Kasbah and visit the Jewish quarter, where you will see the oldest functioning synagogue in Morocco, called ”Lezama”,  and built in 1492. The tour will also include a visit to the Bahia palace, a 19th-century building known for its intricate artisanal work in wood and plaster. In the afternoon, you will explore some of the lesser-known areas of the city, including the markets, bakeries, hammams, and fountains. You will also visit the colorful souks and see the various stalls and workshops of local artisans, including tinsmiths, dyers, and herbalists. The tour will conclude at the Djemaa El Fna square, the largest square in North Africa, where locals gather to enjoy performances by storytellers, musicians, snake charmers, and other entertainers.

Day 3: Marrakech

This tour allows you to relax and discover the beautiful city of Marrakech, which is known for its inspiring culture, history, and people. You will travel by car or horse carriage and visit the 12th century Menara Gardens, which cover over 100 hectares and offer a peaceful retreat and stunning views of the Atlas Mountains. You will also visit the Majorelle Gardens, a 2.5 acre garden with plants from all five continents, created by the French architect Jacques Majorelle over the course of 40 years. The garden has been open to the public since 1947 and has been owned by Yves Saint-Laurent since 1980. You will have 45 minutes to explore the garden before returning to your hotel. The afternoon is free for leisure activities.

Day 4: Marrakech / High Atlas Mountains

After breakfast, you will drive into the High Atlas Mountains, the highest mountain range in North Africa, with a peak of 4167 metres. You will pass through some interesting Berber villages beforearriving at your hotel.

Day 5: High Atlas Mountains

Today, you will take a day trip passing through several Berber villages and make stops to take in panoramic views and visit a Berber women’s cooperative where they produce Argan oil, a Moroccan specialty. You will then continue on to the Ourika Valley, where you will be invited to have a glass of mint tea in a local home and learn about Berber life. From there, you will go to Setti Fatma, which is known for its natural beauty and impressive waterfalls and is a popular starting point for mountain treks. You may choose to have lunch at a local restaurant with views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After lunch, you will travel to the Sidi Fares Valley, an unspoiled area that is not heavily visited by tourists. There, you will have the opportunity to take in views of Mount Toubkal and several villages below Mount Oukaimden. You may also stop for a camel ride by the river. You will then travel to Tahanaout, where farmers and shepherds meet at the weekly market on Tuesdays, before returning to our hotel.

Day 6: Atlas Mountains / Essaouira

Today, you will travel to the charming city of Essaouira. This city was once a key stop on the caravan routes and served as an international seaport that connected Morocco with Europe and the rest of the world. The journey from the Atlas Mountains will take approximately 4 hours and pass through a forest of Argan trees, which produce the famous Moroccan argan oil. You will stop at a women’s cooperative where argan oil is produced along the way.

Day 7: Essaouira

Today, you will explore the Atlantic coast city with a local guide. You will start by visiting one of its historical gates and walking through the traditional, colourful streets and artisan workshops. You will then climb up to the 16th century Portuguese fortress and see some local art galleries and workshops. After that, you will continue to the fishing harbour and see the various types of fish stalls.

You will have the option to take a stroll along the beach or do some shopping in town before returning to your hotel.

Afternoon at leisure.

Day 8: Essaouira / Essaouira or Marrakech Airport.

Today, you will return home either through Essaouira or Marrakech Airport. You will be transferred to the airport for your flight. comeback soon 🙂
