Moroccan Cultural Heritage Tour
13-days tour of Morocco, visiting Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Meknes, Volubilis, Fez, and the Middle Atlas region; includes visits to mosques, palaces, museums, art galleries, and the scenic Erfoud and Merzouga.
Day 1- Casablanca Airport / Casablanca hotel
Welcome to Casablanca, Morocco! After landing you will be met at the airport by a driver holding a sign with your name, who will drive you to your hotel.
Day 2 Casablanca – Rabat
The Hassan II Mosque is a large and beautiful mosque located in Casablanca, Morocco. It is the largest mosque in the country and the seventh largest in the world, with a capacity of over 25,000 worshippers. The mosque was named after King Hassan II, who commissioned its construction and was involved in its design. It features traditional Moroccan and modern architectural elements and has a unique location on the coast, allowing worshippers to pray facing towards Mecca with a view of the ocean. After visiting the mosque, you will travel to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to tour the city and visit the gardens of the royal palace and the Mohammed V mausoleum. The gardens are a peaceful oasis in the city, and the mausoleum is a marble monument that contains the tombs of the last two kings of Morocco. Many consider the mausoleum to be the most beautiful monument in the country and it is often visited by officials as part of protocol.
Day 3 – Rabat – Chefchaouen
After breakfast, head to the blue town of Chefchaouen, located in the Rif mountains. The old medina of Chefchaouen is known for its Andalusian-influenced architecture, including red-tiled roofs, bright-blue buildings, and narrow lanes leading to the busy Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the adjacent Grand Mosque with its octagonal tower. Take a walking tour to explore the Kasbah, which includes a charming garden, an ethnographic museum, and an art gallery. Then, visit the cobbled main square, Plaza Uta el Hamman, which is shaded by trees. The Grand Mosque, built in the 15th century, is also worth a visit. In Chefchaouen, you can also find unique handicrafts.
Day 4 – Chefchaouen -Meknes – Fes
Today, you will be embarking on a journey to Fes, passing through Meknes and the Roman city of Volubilis along the way. Meknes is one of Morocco’s royal cities and was built and became prosperous in the 17th century under the rule of Moulay Ismail, a powerful sultan. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to see Bab el Mansour, considered the most beautiful gate in Morocco, as well as the stables and granaries of the king’s army. You will then drive north to visit Volubilis, a Roman archaeological site that was excavated in the early 20th century and revealed the Roman Empire’s most remote city. After exploring Volubilis, you will continue your journey across a beautiful countryside to the hills leading down to the city of Fes.
Day 5 –Fes
by a certified English-speaking guide who will take you on a tour of this beautiful medieval city. You will start at the Bab Boujlloud gate and make your first stop at the Bou Inania Medrassa, the largest in Fez and a great example of Marinid architecture built between 1350 and 1357. Afterwards, you will walk to En-Nejjarine Square, known for its caravanserai (foundouks) and the Nejjarine fountain, the oldest famous fountain in Fez. The walk continues to Es-Seffarine Square, the coppersmith square, and then to the tanners’ quarter located near the Andalusian quarter with its mosque and the Es-Sahrij medersa. In the afternoon, you will visit the royal palace of the late 19th century, where King Hassan I lived, and see its central four parts garden and the gigantic oak tree. The palace is now a museum of traditional Fez art, followed by a stroll in the Jewish quarter where you can visit a 17th century synagogue. At the end of the trip, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
Day 6 – Fes – Middle Atlas – Erfoud- Merzouga
After breakfast, you will embark on a long and interesting journey heading south from Fes. Along the way, you will pass through Imouzzer Kandar, Ifrane, and Azrou, a typical Berber town with flat-roofed earth houses. The road will take you through magnificent cedar, pine, and oak forests, offering a diverse range of impressions. You will stop for an optional lunch in Midelt before continuing on to Tafilalte, home of Morocco’s current royal family. From there, you will travel along the Ziz Valley to Erfoud where you will overnight and get ready to the desert next day.
Day 7 – Erfoud – Merzouga via Rissani
In the morning, leave the hotel and travel to Rissani, passing through the oasis of Tafilalet. In Rissani, visit Ksar El Fida and its local museum, as well as Ksar Ouled Abdelhalim and the remains of a palace still inhabited by a descendant of the prince. Take a stroll through the traditional souks of Rissani. In the afternoon, visit a fossilized marble factory in Erfoud before continuing to the Saharan dunes of Merzouga. Have mint tea with nomads, then take a camel ride through the dunes. Watch the sunset from the top of the dunes, then head to desert camp for the night.
Day 8 – Merzouga – Todgha Gorges – Skoura
If you wish, you can wake up early to witness the sunrise in the dunes. It is a special occasion that you may want to capture with some photos. After enjoying the sunrise, you will walk back to the camp for breakfast and then prepare to head to Skoura. Along the way, you will stop in Tineghir to visit the Todra Gorges, which are about 1,000 feet high. Afterward, you can have an optional lunch at one of the local restaurants before continuing your drive through the “Valley of the Roses” and El Kelaa M’gouna, known as Morocco’s “rose capital.” You will arrive in Skoura late in the afternoon.
Day 9 – Skoura -Ait Benhaddou -Marrakech
After breakfast, you will continue your journey to Marrakech, passing through the spectacular UNESCO village of Ait Ben Haddou. This area is known for its beauty and has attracted many movie producers in recent years, who have used it as a filming location for movies such as Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, and Babel. After lunch, you will drive to Marrakech via the Tizi N-Tichka pass, which reaches an elevation of 7500 feet and can be covered in snow during the winter months. Upon arriving in Marrakech, you will check into a hotel or riad and stay overnight.
Day 10 – Marrakech
This morning, you will have the opportunity to discover the many cultural and historical attractions of Marrakech, a city known for its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Your tour will begin with a visit to the Medina, the old walled section of the city, where you will see the Koutoubia minaret, a 12th-century landmark that is known for its architectural beauty and can be seen from all parts of the city.
You will also visit the Saadian tombs, a historical site that displays a very high level of decoration, using traditional stucco and Granada-style carving, which is typical of classical Moroccan buildings.
Next, you will visit the Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of domestic architecture that offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the city’s privileged residents in the 19th century. The palace is known for its use of marble, stucco, and mosaics, and features courtyards filled with fountains and plant life.
In the afternoon, you will have the chance to explore the souks, a maze of colorful alleys and small squares that are home to a variety of stalls and ateliers devoted to specific crafts. As evening approaches, you will head to the Djemaa El Fna, the city’s main square, which is known for its lively atmosphere and street performers, including fire-eaters, mime artists, snake-charmers, and musicians. This tour offers a comprehensive overview of the many cultural and historical attractions of Marrakech.
Day 11: Day Trip to the charming Essaouira:
Depart Marrakech at 8am and travel to the charming city of Essaouira, a former international seaport that connected Morocco with the rest of the world. The drive will take about 3 hours and will pass through the Argan trees forest, where you will stop at a women’s cooperative that produces argan oil. Upon arriving in Essaouira, explore the traditional streets and artisan workshops with a local guide. You will visit the 16th century Portuguese fortress and see some of the local art galleries and workshops, and then walk to the fishing harbor and its fish stalls. You will have time to stroll along the beach or go shopping before returning to Marrakesh.
Day 12: Day trip to Ourika Valley:
At 9:30 am, leave the hotel/riad south to the Ourika valley in the High Atlas Mountains. During the 45-minute journey, you will pass through rural and countryside areas of Morocco. You may have the opportunity to stop at the Berber market in Tnine Ourika (on Mondays) before continuing on to Setti Fatma. There, take a gentle hike to the waterfalls with a local guide. After the hike, have lunch at a restaurant with great views of the valley, serving grilled meats, tagines, and salads. In the afternoon, return to Marrakech.
Day 13 – Departure:
After breakfast, you will be picked up for your private transfer to Marrakech Airport to begin your journey home. comeback soon 🙂
